Hear Hums Interview
Here’s the amazing Hear Hums long lost interview that we had with Mitchell Myers and Kenzie Cooke in November, 2011.

1. First, could you tell us how you guys met and began the band?
Mitch - We met in high school. I got asked to do music at an art show. I asked Kenzie and former member Marcos to improvise percussion for the event. It felt really awesome and from there they Integrated into the band.
2. When I listen to your music, I feel as if I were taken to another world apart from secular affairs. Could you tell us things that inspire your music the most?
Kenzie - It’s hard to pinpoint, but I feel it’s a culmination of where I am at in my life, like feelings, circle of thoughts. I try to not think too hard when we’re recording so that it can be pure expression. I just try to do what feels right.
Mitch - I try to take an aspect of how I perceive reality and channel that into how I am creating at the time. A lot of what comes out is molded by how I’m feeling and what I’m experiencing. So in contrast, I would say I overthink things.
3. Your music can be rather described as combination of various sounds and effects, which is totally different from typical composition of songs. Could you tell us the process of making songs?
Kenzie - Recently our process has been one person brings a concept or a specific part written out for a song. Up to this point our process has been pretty free form, layering texture until it feels complete.
4. What bands or artists have influenced on your music the most?
Mitch - I’ve been listening to Mum and Death Cab for Cutie for a long time, they’ve influenced me greatly. I know we’re both inspired by Lucky Dragons, Gang Gang Dance, and Animal Collective. We also dip into different world music to keep a fresh perspective.
5. Your video and artworks are also brilliant, particularly since they perfectly match your sound image. Could you tell us concepts of your artworks if there’re any?
Kenzie - The visuals are meant to be an extension of the music and follow a similar process when being created. Visuals tend to be nonrepresentational forms and are meant to mirror feelings that we hope are universal which allows the viewer to apply their own thoughts and ideas.
6. You’ve released your albums on Bandcamp or CDs by yourselves rather than via labels. Your activity seems real DIY. Could you tell us both advantages and disadvantages that you feel about doing all things by yourself?
Kenzie - It’s really rewarding to feel like you’re making your own path, but it feels good when people want to help you out.
Mitch - We’re spending our money to produce albums and tour rather than a label putting that money up front, so that may slow us down a little bit, but we’ve been able to do what we’ve wanted with the band up to this point.
7. You introduce many bands on your blog which includes some interviews from bands such as Braids and Tree Hopping. I think it well represents the way of the present landscape of indie music, since music media have no longer strong influence because of highly subdivision and segmentation of music genres as well as the rise of Internet media. What do you think about this view?
Mitch - i agree. Furthermore, we have a lot of friends making music that deserves to be heard. Most of the bands on our blog are people we come in contact with. It seems as though a lot of artists may be overlooked, not intentionally, but because of lack of networking.
8. Could you tell us your recent favorite bands?
Mitch - After playing with Braids in February, we’ve been listening to them a lot. After our friend Steve showed us the label Inner Islands, we’ve been listening to Stag Hare recently.
Kenzie - Yep, both two of my new favorites. I’m also really into Mutual Benefit.
9. I’ve watched the video of “Shrines” which is from your forthcoming album “Opens”. This video shows beautiful psychedelic images of nature especially symbolic image of water or river. The music also reminds me of religious image as well as the song title “Shrine”. Could you tell us the concept or theme of the song? Also, tell us briefly what your next album will be like? (*Released in Feb 2012)
Kenzie - To me, Shrines is a washy, meditative song, and the title is more spiritual than religious.
Mitch - The environment throughtout an album is hopefully self explanatory without words. Psyche Cycles feels to me more in the human mind while Opens feels more like an essence in nature.
10. When I saw you live, I was impressed by your intense performance with screaming vocal, powerful and tribal percussion as well as switching several instruments. What is the difference between live performance and recorded music for you?
Kenzie - Recording is a time for new thought and creativity, and a structured live set allows me to let go and release energy.
Mitch - Though the challenge of how to perform something live is present in my mind when recording, I try not to allow that to be a boundary when creating. When performing live, we try to find ways around the limitation of being two people so as to be as engaging as possible.
11. Any future plans?
Mitch - More touring, more albums.
1. 始めに、バンド結成の経緯をお聞かせください。
Mitch - 僕らは高校で出会ったんだ。アート・ショウで音楽をやるよう頼まれてKenzieと前のメンバーMarcosを誘って、そのイベントのためにパーカッションの即興演奏をやったんだ。それがすごくいい感じだったから、そこからバンドに発展していったんだよ。
2. あなた達の音楽を聴いていると世俗的なことから離れて別世界に連れて行かれるような気分になります。あなたの音楽にインスピレーションを与えるものは何ですか？
Kenzie - 正確に言うのは難しいけど、生きている中での最高潮のとき、感情や渦巻く思考なんかかな。レコーディングのときは考えすぎないようにしているから、純粋な表現になるんじゃないかな。いいって感じたことをやるようにしているよ。
Mitch - 僕は自分が知覚している現実のある側面を取りあげて、それをその時つくっている音楽に入れようとしているよ。出来上がってくるものの多くは、自分が感じたことや経験していることによって形作られるんだ。だから逆に僕は物事を考え過ぎてしまうのかな。
3. あなた達の音楽はよくある形式的な展開の曲と違って、どちらかと言えば様々な音とエフェクトの組み合わせという感じですよね。曲作りはどのように行なわれるのですか？
Kenzie - 最近の曲づくりは、どちらか一人が曲のコンセプトや部分的につくったパートを持ってきて、そこからは凄く自由に完成するまでテクスチャーを重ねていくの。
4. どのようなバンドやアーティストに影響を受けましたか？
Mitch - 僕はずっとMumやDeath Cab For Cutieなんかを聴いていて、彼らは僕に凄く影響を与えたね。僕らはどちらもLucky Dragons、Gang Gang DanceやAnimal Collectiveにインスパイアされたよ。それから新鮮な感覚を保つためにいろんなワールドミュージックにも浸っているよ。
5. あなた達のビデオやアートワークもサウンドのイメージに合っていて素晴らしいです。何かコンセプトがあれば教えてください。
Kenzie - アートワークは音楽の延長のつもりで同じようなプロセスで作られるのよ。ヴィジュアルワークは抽象的になることが多いんだけど、それは見る人がそれぞれの考えを当てはめられるように普遍的なものになるようにという気持ちが反映されているの。
6. あなた達は音源のリリースをレーベルを通してではなく、Bandcampや自分たちでCDをリリースしていますね。あなた達の活動はとてもDIY精神に根ざしているように思います。全部自分でやることの利点とデメリットを教えてください。
Kenzie - 自分たちのやり方でやっているという感覚は本当に価値のあることだけど、誰かが手伝いたいと思ってくれたら嬉しいわね。
Mitch -僕らはレーベルに先払いしてもらうよりも、自分たちのお金を費やしてアルバムをつくるから少し時間がかかったりもするけど、今まで自分たちのやりたいことが出来ていたんだ。
7. あなたはブログで沢山のバンドを紹介したり、BraidsやTree Hoppingなどのバンドにインタビューもしていますね。これはインターネットメディアの興隆と音楽ジャンルの細分化によって音楽メディアの影響力が弱くなっている今のインディーシーンを体現しているように思うのですが、この考えはどう思いますか？
Mitch - 同感だね。それにもっと聴かれるべき音楽をつくってる友達がたくさんいるんだ。僕らのブログに載ってる殆どのバンドは、実際に出会ったバンドなんだよ。多くのアーティストが意図的にではなくネットワークの欠落によって見落とされているような気がするよ。
8. 最近のお気に入りのバンドを教えてください。
Mitch - 二月にBraidsと一緒にライブしてから僕らはずっと彼らの音楽をかなり聴いているよ。友達のSteveがInner Islandsというレーベルを教えてくれて、最近はStag Hareを聴いているね。
Kenzie - ええ、彼らはどっちも私たちのお気に入りね。私はMutual Benefitにもハマってるの。
9. 最新アルバム”Opens”の収録曲”Shrines”のビデオを見ましたが、自然のサイケデリックなイメージが美しく、特に川や水の象徴的なイメージを映していますね。音楽も”Shrine” という曲のタイトルも相まって宗教的なイメージを想起させます。曲のコンセプトやテーマを教えてください。アルバムはどのようなものになるのでしょうか？（2月7日にリリースされています*）
Kenzie - 私にとって”Shrine”は水のような瞑想的な曲でタイトルは宗教というよりはもっとスピリチュアルな感じね。
Mitch - アルバムを通じての環境は、言葉がなくても自明だといいな。Psyche Cycle（前作*）はもっと人間の精神の中にある感じだったけど、Opensはもっと自然の本質という感じなんだ。
10. あなた達のライブを見た時その力強いパフォーマンスがとても印象的でした。叫ぶようなボーカル、パワフルでトライバルなパーカッション、それに楽器を持ち替えて演奏していましたね。ライブでのパフォーマンスとレコーディングされた音楽とではどのような違いがあると思いますか？
Kenzie - レコーディングは新しい思考と創造のための時間で、組み立てられたライブセットは私にエネルギーを発散させてくれるものだわ。
Mitch - どのようにライブで演奏するかっていう課題はレコーディングのときからあるんだけど、でもそれを音楽づくりの障壁にはしたくないんだ。ライブパフォーマンスをするときは、２人でやるという制限の中でベストな方法を見つけようとしているよ。
11. 今後の予定は？
Mitch - もっとツアーをして、もっとアルバムをつくることだよ。
